Therefore I focus on the use of my intuition rather than a previously outlined concept. The desire we have to control our surroundings, and how on the contrary this leads to a disconnection with our natural world, has been a starting point in seeking ways of opening up to a more intuitive interaction with our environment, in which we find beauty in the unexpected. By working with Polaroid film, with its inherently mysterious character and often unpredictable outcome, I allow myself to be guided by the direction the material wants to take, and to find ways of surrendering to this uncertainty. Through constructing collages out of photographic material, I create scenes that resemble landscapes, and the formation and disruption of natural phenomena. The final artwork is the coming together of several unique Polaroid’s, every single one distorted in such a way that there is no image left, and only the internal materials of the Polaroid’s remain, resulting in many small chemical landscapes of their own.&nbsp;At the same time I play with our perception of reality and examine photography’s role within this process. By utilizing the contradiction of a photographic collage that resembles a realistic landscape, yet which is a fictitious image made by puzzling together the distorted and abstracted film until the pieces connect, our conception of how the photographic image comes to life is being challenged.&nbsp; Due to the distortion of the film, the pieces are never fully set, constantly asking the viewer to pay attention, and to give in to the uncertainty of not knowing what the work might look like in the future. The instability of the materials, as well as the imagery of natural phenomena, touch upon themes of changes within our natural surroundings and our relationship to this, and of finding acceptance and series ‘A Continual Unfolding’ is an exploration of the uncontrollable, of giving in to the unknown and an openness to whatever is unfolding before us. The desire we have to control our surroundings, and how on the contrary this leads to a disconnection with our natural world, has been a starting point in seeking ways of opening up to a more intuitive interaction with our environment, in which we find beauty in the unexpected. Modern man often seeks refuge in explanation and reasoning. But those who want to fully understand nature, or the world around them as a whole, will never succeed. We as modern humans will have to learn to find meaning again in the incomprehensible, the sublime, in mystery.&nbsp; &nbsp; In respectare, Justus de Rode and Tjitske Oosterholt explore this interaction between reason and feeling in our perception of the world. The work explores the boundaries of photography: from its genesis to modern application. Using intuition as their starting point and guide, they question the core properties of photography: how does the image relate to reality?&nbsp; &nbsp; The work offers a view free of interpretation and explanation, a view that, according to the artists, is at the basis of restored respect. Respect, from the Roman 're-spectare', means something like viewing anew; a fresh look without the noise of prejudices or ideas. In order to move towards a future where we see the natural world as equally important as ourselves, and where we understand we are just as much part of nature as other animate and inanimate beings, we need to be able to imagine what life within something (seemingly) static would look like. How does a rock come to life? How do I relate to a stone? What are minerals to us, and what are we to minerals? The theory Mineral Evolution has been first introduced in a paper by Robert Hazen and his co-authors in 20081. With an emphasis on the word evolution, it poses a similarity to the evolution of life, which until then has been considered a controversial approach to Mineralogy. The theory hypothesizes that Earth’s minerals have formed sequentially and have interacted with life forms for billions of years, inevitably having been affected by biological activity and therefore entangled with the evolution of life. If we realize even the most static form of nature (that is considered to have evolved long before we came to this planet) has a connection to biological life on earth, then what does that mean to us? How can we create a storyline, where we not only coexist with, but also relate to these substances? How do we envision this interaction? With the work in this series, I want to create an imaginative storyline through images. One that invites you to consider ways of looking at nature as an equal.
